Last week, Vice President Jacinto Peynado said that if he wins the election he would have the most harmonious and the very best relations with Haiti. He traveled to Haiti last week to represent President Joaquín Balaguer at the inaugural ceremonies for the new Haitian President, Rene Preval.
He said he went to Haiti to ratify the country’s support of the democratic process in Haiti. “President Balaguer entrusted me with delivering a warm greetings to the new President of Haiti and to tell him that the cooperation of the DR can be assumed – he can count on it,” said Mr Peynado. He added that Dominicans expect to begin a cycle of magnificent relations with their brother country.
He was accompanied by the Minister of Industry and Commerce, José Ramón González, the Haitian ambassador in D.R., Guy Alexandre, and assistants José René Román and Colonel Castro Mercedes. They were met in Haiti by the Dominican ambassador, Eladio Knipping Victoria.
Mr Peynado said that Haiti is a country which consumes a large quantity of Dominican products and feels that clear trading rules and adequate tariffs should be established as Haiti is a market of more than seven million consumers that could be exploited by the D.R., its nearest trading partner. He said that the progress and stability of Haiti means political and economic benefit for the D.R.
