Negotiations between the United States and the Dominican Republic to allow the latter to impose tariffs on eight agricultural items are still under way. The Dominican Republic has submitted a proposal to the World Trade Organization asking for permission to protect its domestic producers of chicken, whole milk, onions, beans, corn, rice, and sugar with import tariffs of between 74 and 162 percent. As the United States is the nation’s chief trading partner, it is prudent for the Dominican Republic to ensure its acquiescence.
