According to the economist, Andres Dauhajre, prior to any sales of state enterprises, Congress should enact sound legislation.for their privatization. Such a legal framework would be conducive to a smooth and clear process. Mr Dauhajre feels that the Dominican Republic lags behind most Latin American nations in this respect. In his opinion, failure to go ahead with a firm plan of action to privatize money losing enterprises will mean lower prices at the time of sale. He explained that the funds generated from privatization of nationalized businesses could be used to finance social programs. He also believes that important savings could be made once the government is freed from bailing out inefficient state enterprises with subsidies.
