Economist values Dominican-Haitian “grey trade” at US$50 million

According to the economist Fernando Pellerano, from the Center for Economic Research, the value of the trade conducted across the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti may well be over US$50 million per annum. He also estimates that the Dominican Republic has an annual trade surplus with Haiti of some US$43 million per year.

Although Haiti represents an important market for the Dominican Republic, its market is only 20 percent the size of its neighbor. Substantial Haitian imports of Dominican products include foodstuffs and pharmaceutical items. Dominican investment in Haiti has been concentrated in the areas of consultancy and construction.
