Political analyst Carlos Doré Cabral wrote last week in Hoy newspaper that the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) presidential candidate, Leonel Fernández, has said he is against abortion for any reason, even those of a claimed therapeutic nature. His position contradicts that of party members, Doctors Guzmán and Kasse Acta who voiced different views in debates on the Public Health Law in Congress. Furthermore, seeking the favor or neutrality of the Catholic Church, Mr Fernández has not attended any events organized by the evangelical sects. Mr Doré Cabral criticized Leonel’s stance saying that the political candidate should not forget that Catholics do not vote for religious reasons, some 400,000 voters are evangelicals and follow very closely how the candidates view their churches and thirdly, that women’s movements are very sensitive to ideas expressed about abortion.
