Speaking at the Asociación de Industrias de Haina, a group of businessmen in Haina, in the National District, PLD presidential candidate, Leonel Fernández said that the government is presently exporting taxes and penalizing exporters because of all the obstacles to selling any product abroad. He considered it is unacceptable that to export anything, exporters must go through 39 bureaucratic steps that turn into a wall impeding the development of the country’s export markets. He criticized the fact that there is no unified exchange rate to the prejudice of the exporters.
He said that the DR is one of the countries with most obstacles facing exporters and he attributed this situation to the lack of a national policy to promote exports. He said if he wins the election, he will reduce the red tape to a minimum, and committed himself to modifying the rules to encourage manufacturing.
Regarding the electricity shortage, he said that one of the first measures of his government will be to install two power stations producing 250 megawatts, while a definitive solution is provided. He said these can be operational in 12 to 18 months.
