Edylberto Cabral elected rector of UASD

Dr. Edylberto Cabral received 53.4% of the votes in a run-off election at the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) to win a three-year term as rector of the state-funded university. Dr. Cabral defeated Miguel Rosado Montes de Oca, who was supported by 46.6% of the voters. Mr. Cabral’s victory was attributed to the pact he made with Julio Ravelo Astacio, who came in third place in the election’s first round. Many political observers have pointed out that the run-off at UASD could serve as a model for the forthcoming presidential election in the D.R., which will have a second round for the first time in the nation’s history in the case of no candidate receiving more than 50% of the votes. The “courting” of the third place finishers by those who came in first and second is a likely scenario in the days following the 16 May election, and many believe that the second round feature could reduce “negative campaigning”, since the candidates vying for the presidency before the first round will have to ask for an opponent’s support in the second.
