The Dominican Republic received foreign investments worth close to US$1 thousand million during the first years of the present decade, according to a report released by CEPAL, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean.
The study on foreign investment in Latin American and the Caribbean indicates that for 1983-1993, the influx of foreign capital into the country reached some US$996 million.
CEPAL researchers report that the bulk of these foreign monies went to the free trade zones. Of this figure, US$641 million arrived in 1990-93, and the remaining US$355 million in 1986-1989. The highest investment level was registered in 1993, when the country recorded an in-flow of US$183 million.
