Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez received a honoris causa title from the Universidad Evangélica in the Humanities. The event was held at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música and was attended by the Minister of Education, José Andrés Aybar Sánchez. The rector of the university, Rafael Danilo Grullón, and vice rector Felix Hernández, presented Dr Peña Gómez with the title. He later said that he shares the opinion of Cardinal Nicolás de Jesús López Rodriguez, the leader of the Roman Catholics in the D.R., that no man, nor party or coalition of parties alone can take upon themselves the task of directing the country.
Dr Peña Gómez has also received honors from the Universidad Compultense de Madrid, Spain, and the Tecnológica de Santo Domingo. He said that if he wins the election, he will ensure ample participation by the Catholic Church and the representatives of evangelic congregations in the country’s affairs.
Dr Peña Gómez’s position is different from that of PLD’s, Leonel Fernández, who has neither courted the vote of the Evangelicos, nor remained neutral but rather, the political observers say, has unequivocally favored the Catholic Church.
