Other replies to the Cardinal’s statement

The Partido de la Liberación Dominicana reacted by indicating they are against the JCE granting “undetermined and unnumbered accreditations to an institution that has been created to observe the elections.” The PLD believes that the Junta Central Electoral (JCE) should accredit the electoral observers in a personal and individual manner. Dr. Leonel Fernández himself told the press that the JCE has already established the guidelines that will govern the participation of observers in the election.

The Political Secretary of the Partido Reformista Social Cristiano, Federico Antún Batlle, said he was opposed to the Red de Observadores. He said, “I think that the political parties have their delegates at each of the electoral tables and these are the ones who should observe and defend the rights they have at each electoral table.”

The U.S. Ambassador Donna Hrinak has declined to comment, but later met with President Balaguer at the National Palace. The press did not divulge the topic that was discussed with the President.
