Rene Preval is expected to make an official visit on 12-13 March. It will precede his journey to Washington to meet with President Bill Clinton. A committee of Dominican businessmen travelled to Haiti Tuesday 5 March to meet with their Haitian counterparts.
In his last speech to the nation on 27 February, Dr Balaguer supported the concept of the Haitian and Dominican governments presenting a united front to the benefit of both countries. The two presidents will discuss bilateral agreements, immigration, the strengthening of trade relations, and taking advantage of joint programs for the development of frontier areas financed by the European Union, among other topics.
Another demonstration of the intent of the Balaguer administration to foster improved relations with Haiti is the incumbent Dominican ambassador in the Haitian capital, Eladio Knipping Victoria, one of the country’s most outstanding career diplomats who previously was the country’s envoy to the Organization of American States and the United Nations.
