The Haitian President, Rene Preval, who is planning an official state visit to see President Balaguer, will also meet with 40 businessmen of the National Council of Private Enterprise (CONEP) in Port-Au-Prince on Tuesday, 5 March at a special luncheon given at the Haitian National Palace. Mr. Preval and representatives of CONEP were originally to meet on 19 February in Santo Domingo when it was thought that the Haitian president would be visiting the D.R., but the official visit has been postponed until mid or late March.
Contacts between Haitian and Dominican businessmen have increased substantially in the last two years, as the two parties attempt to formally establish the commercial relationship that has made Haiti the country’s second largest trading partner, being only behind the United States. Since much of the business done between Haitians and Dominicans is of an informal nature, statistics on the volume of trade between the two nations have been difficult to compile.
