Heavy rains damage power lines

The heavy rains that hit the D.R. during the period 12-15 March left 50 circuits of the Corporación Dominicana de Electricidad (CDE) out of service, causing long power cuts in Santo Domingo and the interior. The sectors most affected in the capital were the Zona Universitaria, El Manguito, La Julia, Los Alcarrizos, La Venta, Herrera, Simon Bolivar and Capotillo, among others. The frail power lines, the majority of which are old and obsolete, tend to go out of service during heavy rains or high winds, both of which affected the country during the period in question.
