Speaking at a meeting of the Asociación Dominicana de Inversión Extranjera (ASIEX), José Francisco Peña Gómez, the presidential candidate of the Partido Revolutionario and a broad coalition of smaller parties, said that the country should sign the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency Convention (MIGA). MIGA, a World Bank affiliate, establishes rules of arbitration to settle disputes between international investors and individual nations. Dr. Peña Gómez believes that now the economy is starting to experience sustainable growth, the Dominican government should prepare the country to be more competitive in attracting foreign investments. He said that the nation needs to take the steps necessary to face the difficult challenges resulting from trade internationalization and the commitments made at the Uruguay Trade Round.
