The well-known former car dealer, Rene Fiallo, was released on bail in the amount of RD$500,000 by the Supreme Court, the sum being recommended by the National Attorney General. Mr. Fiallo had unsuccessfully attempted to gain release from prison on bail from the Santo Domingo Court of Appeals since he was detained early last year. He has been charged with defrauding several individuals, including television producer Milton Palaez, of millions of pesos. The case has received some attention in the news media as Mr. Fiallo was one of the most advertised car dealers in the D.R. His famous television advertisements promoted him as the “dealer who you can trust”, and he was often seen at publicity events for his dealership and other businesses and projects. He filed for bankruptcy in late 1994, and was accused of fraud in January of 1995.
