Jacinto Peynado, the country’s Vice President, Rafael Alburquerque, the Minister of Labor, and the vice presidential candidate of the PLD, Jaime David Fernández Mirabel, who is the senator for Salcedo, were required to take a leave of absence from their official duties until 17 May. Jacinto Peynado is the presidential candidate for the Partido Reformista Social Cristiano, and Rafael Alburquerque is running for president with the Partido del Pueblo Dominicano, a minority party over which he presides. According to the Dominican Constitution and the Electoral Law, candidates for national office should request a leave of absence with pay from their official functions. It ceases the day after the election. In the case of Jaime David Fernández Mirabal, if he is elected Vice President he will have to resign from his post in the Senate as he was elected until 1998.
