PLD candidate meets with Puerto Rican governor

Presidential candidate, Leonel Fernández, met with Puerto Rican Governor Pedro Roselló González at his office in La Fortaleza in San Juan. They discussed economic and social issues. On the illegal voyages to Puerto Rico from the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernández said that punitive measures are not enough if the problem is not fought at its roots. “The situation of critical poverty in which many live in the Dominican Republic is what motivates the illegal journeys, and the PLD intends to introduce a plan to reduce such poverty. He also emphasized the need to take measures to improve the image of the Dominican community in Puerto Rico. He attended the meeting with Temístocles Montás, Eduardo Selman, Dr Abel Rodríguez del Orbe, Dr José Joaquín Bidó Medina, Diandino Peña and Luís Manuel Bonetti. Dr Fernández said he would also like to open an office in Puerto Rico to promote investment to this country, taking advantage of the new foreign investment law. Trade between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic is estimated at US$1,000 million, which Leonel Fernández feels can be expanded.
