Words of praise for 1996 election campaign

Bienvenido Alvarez-Vega, writing for the newspaper Hoy, has words of praise for the present electoral campaign. “We are all widely pleased, or at least a large segment of our society, for the high levels, the tolerance and the enriching discussions that the electoral campaign has produced to date,” he writes. “The presidential candidates and the vice presidential candidates, the majority parties and the minority parties all move freely around the country expounding their ideas, offering talks, holding meetings, processions and marches, always accompanied by a happy young crowd that sings, calls out, screams, makes signs and enjoys this feast of democracy.”

He said that this campaign is also characterized by the interest shown by the principal organized groups of the nation in presenting to the voters and the presidential candidates their vision of Dominican society, a diagnosis of its present state in order to determine the fundamental problems, and present proposals for their solution. He mentioned among them, the Consejo Nacional de la Empresa Privada Agenda Nacional program.
