Victor Grimaldi, General Controller of the nation, announced on Wednesday, 10 April, that he will introduce a system to value government property, because, he said, there are people interested in looting it. He said that the plan is to immediately begin an inventory of government property, ranging from the infrastructure including highways, bridges, schools, hospitals, housing, recreation centers, etc., to the government enterprises such as the CDE, which he estimates is worth US$2 thousand million, to the CEA and the CORDE group of nationalized businesses. A third group, he says, includes the large dams. He said when the inventory is completed, the Dominican people will be aware of what they own. He added that it will also permit them to compare the investment by this government to that of the next, and when the figures are at hand, they will be able to defend the state against the neo-liberal privatization efforts that are planned for the future by some interests. He commented that the present cases of corruption are going to be belittled by the crazy privatizations that are being planned, like those that have taken place in other Latin American countries.
