José Francisco Peña Gómez commented in Hoy last week, that if Leonel Fernández, the presidential candidate for the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana, wins the election, he will be subject to the whims of President Balaguer. The PLD only has one senator in Congress and 13 deputies, and will therefore depend on President Balaguer’s support to pass any bill. “How is the poor thing going to govern, if it is not seeking the consent of, going to incline and pay tribute to Joaquín Balaguer so that he supports him in Congress,” said the PRD leader. He emphasized that Leonel Fernández will have to begin an inevitable pilgrimage to the house of Dr Balaguer to develop his government plans. He said that under that situation he will not be able to cut through the palatial ring of influence-makers with a machete nor govern with an independent justice, as the support he receives will come with strings attached. Dr Peña Gómez said that his government will take advantage of his party’s congressional strength to introduce important social reforms in its first two years. Peña Gómez made the comments speaking on Aeromundo, where he was interviewed by Guillermo Gómez.
