In its official Good Friday sermon, the Catholic Church criticized Dominicans for being indifferent and for their apathy to the problems that affect the country, stating that the nation is living in a democratic system contaminated by corruption, social disorder, delinquency, violence and a lost of trust in justice and the official institutions. It issued a call for Dominicans to awaken their consciences, and to reflect on the electoral process and the 16 May election, after considering that to abstain without a serious reason would be to fail in their civic duty.
In the Sermón de las Siete Palabras, given by Father Gregorio Alegría Armendariz, the Church asked Dominicans to reflect on the deterioration of the public services, the lack of an institutional structure, the loss of faith in the system, and social and political apathy. He said, “To you, Dominican citizens, Jesus also pardons you because you do not know what you are doing with your indifference, your apathy, your alienation; perhaps your consciences and your responsibilities as both citizens and Christians are asleep. “Wake up, Dominicans and the crucified Christ will pardon you.”
