Leonel Fernández said on television last week that the votes he needs to win in the first round of the election will come from the supporters of the Partido Reformista Social Cristiano. He said that “many Reformistas do not like the way Jacinto Peynado is carrying out his campaign and could rather vote in his favor on 16 May. He said that President Joaquín Balaguer is heading activities quite separate from those of Mr Peynado, and “with phrases and signals that lead me to believe that things are not going well and that the electoral machinery of the PRSC is not running harmoniously. He said that if the possible polarization of the process is between him and José Francisco Peña Gómez, the margin to win the election would have to come from the PRSC.
