Finance expert calls for increased financial sophistication

Raisa Gil de Fondeur, executive vice president of the Banco Nacional de Crédito, said that the country must enter now into new era of financial sophistication. She said there is the need to create medium and long term funding for business and advocated the creation of a capital market where companies can issue shares, bonds or other medium and long term corporate financing instruments.

In addition to industrial restructuring, she said that the country needs financial restructuring, a move she says is necessary if Dominican products are to compete successfully with imports. There is still not a security exchange law that would provide the legal framework for the present stock exchange. All three major presidential candidates say they will address this problem if they are elected to power.
