Protests at UASD on anniversary of civil war

The state-run Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) was the site of student protests on 24 April, the 31st anniversary of the “Revolution of 1965” which resulted in a limited civil war in the D.R, mostly concentrated in the capital. During the protests, students threw rocks and other objects at police, who responded with tear gas. The grounds of the university were closed, causing great inconvenience for commuters who use public transport, as one of the main transport routes runs directly through UASD’s campus.
On 24 April, 1965, sympathizers of Juan Bosch of the Partido Revolucionario Dominicano, who had been removed from the presidency and exiled to Puerto Rico by the military in September of 1963, were joined by several military officers in their call for his return. An armed conflict ensued, and on 28 April the ruling government asked for military assistance from the United States, which sent several thousand Marines. The forces in favor of Professor Bosch, the so-called constitucionalistas, were defeated.
