Candidates sign electoral agreement

The five candidates for the presidency of the country, José Francisco Peña Gómez, Leonel Fernández, Jacinto Peynado, Rafael Alburquerque and José Rafael Abinader signed an agreement last week, el Pacto por el Respeto a la Constitución y por la Gobernabilidad, committing their acceptance of the results of the election as declared by the Junta Central Electoral, and to cooperate to ensure that the voting process proceeds normally. The agreement was signed at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra in Santo Domingo in presence of representatives of the Catholic Church, the news media, six labor unions, the Confraternidad Evangélica Dominicana, and representatives of the business community and universities. The event was considered to be another advance for Dominican democracy.

President Balaguer was asked to sign the pact in his position as president of the Partido Reformista Social Cristiano but refused to do so, saying he was not running for office.
