One less presidential candidate

The Partido del Pueblo Dominicano (PPD) has signed an agreement with the PLD to support its presidential and vice presidential candidates, Leonel Fernández and Jaime David Fernández. The PPD candidates, Rafael Alburquerque and Dalia Féliz, requested that the JCE cancel their candidatures and called for their supporters to vote for the PLD. As the ballot papers are already printed and show PPD candidates, the party has requested that votes for number 12 should be declared null and void.

Leonel Fernández called Mr Alburquerque’s gesture an encounter between brothers. He mentioned that Rafael Alburquerque, like himself, is a disciple of Profesor Juan Bosch who hugged Mr Alburquerque at the signing of the agreement. Rafael Alburquerque has been Minister of Works during the present Balaguer administration. He was running mate to Professor Juan Bosch during the elections of 1978 and 1982 and was secretary general of the PLD from its foundation to 1982 to when he left to found his own organization, following differences with Professor Bosch.
