Last week, the Adjunct Deputy Secretary of State for the Caribbean and Central America met separately with Leonel Fernández, Jose Francisco Peña Gómez, and Jacinto Peynado during his first official visit to the country. Mr John Hamilton was accompanied by the U.S. ambassador to the country, Donna J. Hrinak. The U.S. government official reportedly came to express the interest of President Bill Clinton in the Dominican election passing without trauma.
He also met with President Balaguer, and after speaking to him he commented on the new electoral law that provides structural guarantees on the rights of the citizens, and that the surveys show Dominicans have great confidence in the honesty, technical capacity and administration of the JCE which, he said, is as how things should be and a matter of satisfaction for everybody.
