Dr. Florencio Lorenzo Silva, director of the national tax collection department, Impuesto Sobre la Renta, died of lung cancer in Bogota, Colombia at the age of 69 on Tuesday, 7 May. Dr. Silva had had a long battle with the disease, although it was not well publicized. Dr. Silva was a public employee over a span of 35 years in various governments. He had also been director of Impuesto Sobre la Renta during the government of Salvador Jorge Blanco in 1984, and served in several capacities in the governments of the current president, Joaquin Balaguer. Employees of Dr. Silva in Impuesto Sobre la Renta described him as a man of great discipline, always arriving at his office early and also as a man of trust in the eyes of the National Palace and President Balaguer. Dr. Silva’s remains were brought back to Santo Domingo from Bogota, where he had gone for medical treatment.
