The leading Dominican insurance companies, rated by the amount of the premiums billed for January-March 1996 were: Compañía Nacional de Seguros (RD$133 million), La Universal de Seguros (RD$126 million), Seguros America (RD$92 million), Intercontinental de Seguros (RD$61 million), La Colonial de Seguros (RD$39 million), Seguros Bancomercio (RD$33 million), Magna Compañía de Seguros (RD$32 million), American Life and General Insurance (RD$31 million), Seguros La Antillana (RD$25 million) and Seguros San Rafael (RD$13 million). According to the Superintendency of Insurance, the insurance companies showed a growth of 20% for the first quarter of the year, regardless of the slow down in economic activity due to the election.
