Vehicles on the roads

There are 405,458 vehicles in the Dominican Republic, says the Dirección General de Rentas Internas, the government department in charge of issuing number plates. Of these, 294,110 are from Asia, 36,062 from Europe and 44,559 from the United States. There are 234,482 cars, 133,400 goods vehicles, 19,533 buses and 17,973 “jeeps”.

According to the figures, given by the director of the department, Alexandra Izquierdo de Peña, published in the Listín Diario, motorcycles and other similar conveyances are not included. The figures also omit official and diplomatic vehicles, and those exonerated from paying taxes. She indicated that prior to 1980, there were 114,388 motor vehicles in the country.
