OTT warns users of public transport about “tablillas”

The Oficina Técnica de Transporte (OTT), together with the National Police, has warned citizens using the public transport system not to board small cars “conchos” whose drivers do not have their identification plates known as “tablillas” clearly displayed. The campaign to have all drivers obtain such plates began last November when a wave of robberies carried out by men posing as public vehicle drivers alarmed the users of public transport. While many of the drivers obtained the plates, many did not and despite some police operations against those without the tablillas, commuters continued to board cars where they are not displayed. In the last few weeks the police have increased their operations against those without the tablillas, detaining the drivers and impounding their vehicles. The director of the OTT, Federico Gonzalez Aviles, told the news media that public concho car drivers were lining up “in masses” to apply for and receive their tablillas. He said that in the next few weeks all cars will have them. In the meantime, he said, users of public transport should avoid boarding cars without the plates, and the police operation will continue. Mr. Gonzalez Aviles also said that another advantage of having the identification. plates is that the OTT will have a better idea of how many cars are on the street and who their drivers are, in order to have a better distribution on the different routes both in the capital and the interior, and to remove any drivers with a criminal history.
