The former Attorney General of the National District, Josefina Juan de Pichardo, currently living in Miami, has complained that the Dominican government has increased its campaign to keep her out of the country by sending her photograph to various airports and ports in the U.S. and the D.R. Mrs. Juan de Pichardo, who is accused of several counts of corruption in relation to her period as Attorney General and who is reported to be suffering from cancer, was denied entrance into the D.R. two weeks ago. The Director of Immigration, Vitelio Mejia Ortiz, has sent official notice to all commercial airlines that fly to and from the D.R. saying that Mrs. Juan de Pichardo is not permitted to enter the country. The Judicial Consultant to the President, Hector Perez Reyes, has said that the presence of Mrs. Juan de Pichardo in the D.R. would “obstruct the climate of peace” here, since she has threatened on several occasions to reveal the names of high-ranking members of the government in scandals involving drug-trafficking and other crimes. Many prominent judicial experts, however, dispute the legality of the measure to deny Mrs. Juan de Pichardo entrance to the country as she is a Dominican citizen. The most vocal critic has been Domingo Porfirio Rojas Nina, the president of the Dominican Committee on Human Rights, who has cited several articles of the Dominican Constitution which clearly refute the legality of the ban on her entry.
