The rector of the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), Edylberto Cabral, met for more than ten hours with authorities of the state-run and financed university in order to find a solution to what he has called a “profound crisis” in the institution’s finances. Mr. Cabral complained that UASD has yet to receive the monthly financial contribution from the central government, and that the construction of new buildings and facilities begun under the leadership of former rector Roberto Santana have been stopped because of a lack of funds. He also claims that the government has not played its part in a three-way investment including the Interamerican Development Bank and the FUNDAPEC foundation for the creation of numerous technical courses to be initiated at the Santo Domingo campus. Mr. Cabral claims to have paid all of its administrative and teaching personnel for the month of May, yet warns that if the central government does not meet its monthly commitment, there exists the danger of another strike at the university due to lack of payment of wages and salaries, similar to the one last January.
