Oranges in abundance

Speaking for the Asociación Dominicana de Citricultores, Quirilio Vilorio Caminero said that there has been a large crop of oranges, but Dominican exporters are having to compete with the low prices asked by the Cubans. Meanwhile, Dominican consumers are benefiting from the low price of oranges on the domestic market. He says that this year’s crop is 30% more than last year. The fruit has been favored by rain and other beneficial natural conditions. He said that Dominicans have increased their consumption of oranges and their juice, and that the principal problems affecting the farmers centered on the lack of credit and the high cost of money.
