Refuse continues to pile up

Refuse continues to pile up in many sectors of Santo Domingo, as the Attwoods Dominicana company and the Santo Domingo city council continue to issue conflicting public statements. Mayor Rafael Suberví Bonilla claims that the Duquesa refuse dump, the main dumping ground for the National District, has ample space for the refuse collected daily while Attwoods, through its public relations department, maintains that the dump is no longer suitable. Mayor Suberví responded to a 9 June editorial in the Listín Diario newspaper, which claims that “There is nowhere to dump the refuse”, by denying that the Duquesa dump is unsuitable. In a letter published in the 13 June edition of the Listín Diario, he claims that the contract to which Attwoods is a party, is with the central government which, in turn, deducts the payment to the company from the city council’s annual budget. Mr. Suberví, like his predecessor Rafael Corporán de los Santos, harshly criticizes Attwoods Dominicana for what he calls a “failure to honor the contract with the government”. Meanwhile, Attwoods maintains its claim that it has sufficient trucks and equipment to do the job it was hired for, and it is the condition of the Duquesa dump that prevents it from fully acquitting its obligations.
