Cigar manufacturers met with President Joaquín Balaguer last week to recognize his efforts in favor of their industry. Hendrick Kelner, president of the Association of Cigar Producers, said that the Dominican Republic continues to be the principal cigar exporter to the world, with an increase of 25% expected this year. The Association of Cigar Producers expects exports to reach 120 million units this year, up from the 95 million last year. The value should reach US$63 million. Mr Kelner said that the main problem producers confront is not being able to meet the international demand for Dominican cigars, despite efforts to increase production capacity.
