European Union supports joint Haiti-DR programs

Last week, the new director of the Lome IV funds in the Dominican Republic, Arístides Fernández Zucco, announced that the European Union has approved some 30 million ECUS (RD$440 million) for joint schemes along the frontier of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. He said that his office is undergoing a restructuring and reorganization to guarantee the clean, honest, and transparent employment of the European Union resources. He said that the European Union has placed much interest in promoting joint projects between the Dominican Republic and Haiti and has instructed its representative, Carlos Manai, to support bi-national schemes. One of the most important is the Las Dos Bocas dam on the Rio Artibonito which will generate electricity for this country and simultaneously supply potable water for Haiti.
