Jose Manuel Paliza, president of the Consejo Nacional de la Empresa Privada, the principal business organization, said, in a speech at an American Chamber of Commerce luncheon, that the business community’s concern is that politicians “ensure governability, so that we may set out on a joint mission as a nation.” He said that businessmen are concerned of the governableness of the nation after the swearing in of the new president, and when it becomes clear that the expectations raised during the campaign are beyond reality.
He mentioned the 10 priorities of any government effort, as agreed upon by the Grupo de la Acción por la Democracia:
Fight against poverty, justice, stable electricity supply, modernization of the state, improvement of education, health, housing for the poor, social security for all employed, protection of the ecology, and a strengthening of democracy.
He said that the business community supports the Junta Central Electoral and that any claim by the losers should be taken to that body. He warned that no candidate should claim victory until the Junta announces the winner.
