The Economist Intelligence Unit has revealed that in the middle of the electoral process the Dominican government apparently made strong efforts to try and get the U.S. Congress to approve a bilateral treaty with the D.R., which would reduce the trade barriers between the two countries. It indicated it is probable that in the agreement a clause is included committing the Dominican Republic to accept safeguards on intellectual property rights.
