The big Mercado Nuevo market on Avenida Duarte, sometimes characterized by a lack of care and hygiene, is being cleaned up and better organized by a brigade sent by the Santo Domingo city council. Since the 30 June presidential run-off, units sent by Mayor Rafael Suberví Bonilla have collected refuse which had piled up over the last few months. Although merchants in the Mercado Nuevo told the Hoy newspaper that they are pleased the city council is taking the initiative to collect the refuse, there is still considerable work to be done, including the repair of the drains. According to those who do business in the market, the slightest rainfall produces a “river” inside the Mercado Nuevo’s building.
