Last week, the governor of the Central Bank, Hector Valdez Albizu, said that the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has been underestimated by 20% because of the method employed for its calculation. Since the introduction of the new System of National Accounts 1993, the GDP of the country was recalculated, from 1991 to 1994, using 31 sectors of the economy instead of the 14 sectors employed in the past. Mr. Valdez Albizu also said that the application of the new system for calculating the GDP will permit the government and all others who have need of the figures to make their calculations with greater accuracy.
