New conflict between CDE and Smith-Enron

Prior to leaving his post, the general administrator of the Corporación Dominicana de Electricidad (CDE), Amilcar Romero, announced that its lawyers would sue the Smith-Enron corporation for charging the state-owned electricity company for power that he claims was never generated.

The Smith-Enron company operates a power station in Puerto Plata which, according to its contract with the CDE, should provide 185,000 kilowatts of electricity per day to the national distribution network.

Mr. Romero claims that the electricity has not been provided in accordance with the terms of the contract. Representatives of Smith-Enron have announced their intention to file a counter suit against the CDE, claiming that it has not been paid in full for its services. The electricity service, which had substantially improved in the last weeks of July and the beginning of August, has suffered during the second week of this month, with lengthy power cuts returning to most parts of the nation.
