Jaime David Fernández Mirabal was born on 15 October, 1956 in the province of Salcedo, part of the Cibao region, son of Jaime Fernández and Dede Mirabal. Dr. Fernández Mirabal’s aunts, Patria, Maria Teresa and Minerva were all killed during the family’s struggle against the Trujillo dictatorship.
His father, Jaime Fernández was the appointed governor of Salcedo from 1978-1982 during the presidential term of Antonio Guzmán Fernández, a close relative.
Dr. Fernández Mirabal is a psychiatrist and agronomist who has preferred a career in politics, winning the senatorial race in his province on two occasions. Indeed he was on his way to Costa Rica, under a United Nations contract, when he won the Senate position in 1994 and stayed. He gave up his senate seat upon winning the vice-presidency.
After graduating from high school in Salcedo, young Jaime David studied at the Instituto Evangélico de Santiago, and later at the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC). He received his specialty degree in Italy, living several years there and in Spain.
He entered the PLD in 1978, winning the Salcedo senate seat for the first time in 1990.
He is married to Lisette Campos and has a six-year old daughter.
