Debate on modification of Constitution to continue

The debate in the Senate over the adding of several amendments to the Constitution was to continue on Tuesday, 18 September. The proposal to call a National Assembly for the modification of the Carta Magna, is being presented by 13 of the 14 senators of the Partido Reformista Social Cristiano (PRSC).

Some of the most important reforms are the modification of Article 55, which affects the powers of the executive branch of government, the possible extension from four to six years of the current term of Congressmen elected in 1994, in order to coincide with the presidential elections, and the reduction from 50% to 40% of the votes needed to win an election in the first round and avoid a run-off. A total of 20 articles are mentioned for reform in the PRSC proposal.
