Employment and an open economy

Economist Jose Luis Aleman has pointed out that the country’s openness to foreign investment has generated lots of jobs and gives, as examples, the free zones and tourist industry. He said that between June 1986 to June 1996 the amount of people working in free zones, went up from 51,221 to 180,000, and that employment at hotels increased from 12,426 jobs in 1986 to 43,971 in 1995. Also, those working at restaurants went from 3,872 in 1988 to 5,962 in 1992. On the other hand, he claimed that employment in agriculture and fishing strongly decreased by 115,463 jobs, when it went down from 473,097 in 1991 to 357,634 in January of 1996.
