Free Trade Agreement between Haiti and D.R.

The Dominican Republic and Haiti will establish an agreement that allows free trade between the two countries, thus stopping cross border smuggling. At a meeting held in Port au Prince, the Haitian capital, the nations’ representatives also agreed to ten important projects, with the emphasis on border infrastructure and fighting crop diseases. Other important issues were the following: the establishment of an agricultural and forestry school, soil conservation, border reforestation, conservation of Lago Enriquillo lake, and the development of the tourist industry. Another meeting will be held in the D.R. in March 1997, according to the Haiti Foreign Minister, Fritz Longchamp, who led his country’s delegation. The D.R.’s Foreign Minister Eduardo Latorre, the Minister for Industry and Commerce Luis Manuel Bonetti, Technical Secretary to the Presidency Eduardo Selman, and Agricultural Minister Frank Rodriguez were the leading Dominicans who took part in the meeting.
