Will the D.R. participate in the Caribbean Baseball Series?

The president of the Dominican Professional Winter Baseball League, Leonardo Matos Berrido, said that the D.R.’s participation in the 1997 Caribbean Series “has yet to be determined”. The Dominican league has complained about the distribution of the profits of the Series, where the winning team is awarded US$35,000 and the runner-up US$25,000. Mr. Matos Berrido has threatened not to send the Dominican team unless the monies are distributed evenly to each team that participates.

The Serie del Caribe is played every February between the champions of the winter leagues of Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. It was played at Estadio Quisqueya in Santo Domingo last February, and will be held in Hermosillo, Mexico, next year.
