The Interamerican Bank for Development (IDB) has lent US$52 million for the improvement of the irrigation system. It will be disbursed over a period of 5 years and be administered by the Instituto Nacional de Recursos Hidraúlicos (INDRHI). The government is under the obligation to provide a further US$13 million under the agreement. The IDB has also donated US$90,000, from the US$142,000 set aside for strengthening the negotiating capacity of the Dominican Republic in regard to international agreements. The rest of the money will be contributed by the United Nations Program for Development (UNPD), US$40,000, and by the government, US$10,000. The agreement was signed in the city of Miami by IDB president Enrique Iglesias, technical minister to the Presidency, Eduardo Selman, representing the Dominican government, and Central Bank governor, Héctor Valdez Albizu.
