Salary increases defended by President

President Leonel Fernández said that the salary increases he has ordered for high ranking government executives is the beginning of an ethical revolution that looks to shun temptation and provide lifestyle in accord with responsibilities. Vice President Jaime David Fernández said that those who lead the country and take important decisions should earn a decent salary. Meanwhile, the administrative minister to the presidency , Diandino Peña, said that the salary increase will cost the government between RD$7 and RD$8 million per month. This will be covered by the savings the government has made by stopping payments by the treasury to public “employees” who did no work at all – the popularly named botellas.
