OAS pressures government to solve Narcisazo case

The Organization of American States (OAS) has pressured the Dominican government to solve the case of the disappearance of Narciso (Narcisazo) Gonzalez, who was last seen on 26 May, 1994. Mr. Gonzalez’s wife, Altagracia Ramirez de Gonzalez, recently traveled to Washington with other friends and family members of the university professor to meet with representatives of the OAS, which gave the Dominican government 30 days to find preliminary evidence in the case. Mr. Gonzalez disappeared after writing a scathing article against then President Joaquin Balaguer. Mrs. Ramirez de Gonzalez has told the news media that she thinks, as do most others, that her husband was kidnapped, tortured and killed.

Shortly after taking office on 16 August, President Leonel Fernandez said that his government would make all efforts to solve the case. The Dominican Committee on Human Rights formed a Truth Commission to look into the case. The Commission requested a meeting with President Fernandez to discuss their findings before Mrs. Ramirez de Gonzalez visited the OAS office, yet there was no response from the National Palace.
